It usually starts out like this: An expecting mother walks into our office, referred by her friends, her searches online, or her Lead Maternity Care provider, she is looking for help with a symptom she’s developed during the pregnancy. She develops a relationship with our office and understands the benefit of chiropractic so well that she wants her baby under care. We’re now about six months to a year into working with one another, and Dad usually starts wondering if we adjust men, too? He has seen the benefits his partner and child have received and is interested to experience this for himself.
You must be thinking there has to be more going on here than “chiropractic helped my back pain.”
At Eastern Bay Chiropractic, our focus is different; we look at the body holistically. Our focus is on total body connection ensuring optimal nerve system function and development, not just what hurts.
So you ask, what might start that initial relationship between expecting mother and chiropractor? Read on to find out more;
- When pregnant your center of gravity moves forward increasing the lumbar curve (lower back) which places extra strain and force through the lumbar spine and joints, this can lead to unnecessary discomfort for the mother.
- The hormone Relaxin loosens joints: This can lead to irritation and imbalance in the pelvis and decrease over all pelvis stability.
- Growing baby and increased movement of baby creates expansion through the rib cage and can aggravate the spinal segments through the mid back.
- Increased breast size as you prepare for lactation can create increased stress and tension at the neck and shoulders.
- Pelvis misalignments can alter pelvis opening leading to intrauterine constraint (Decrease room inside of your pelvis, less space for bubs to move).
- The mother has heard about the positive outcomes chiropractic care during pregnancy can have on labour and recovery.
These are just a few examples, most stemming from the mother experiencing discomfort. The most important thing that we as chiropractors are looking at however is not the discomfort itself but IS how the nerve system is functioning with all this change, growth and development of baby. Are all the system communicating clearly or can we help by removing subluxations (misaligned joints) and improving communication.
Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the need of surgery or drugs.
In a hospital study that incorporated chiropractic adjustments during the pregnancy, there was a 50% decrease in the need for painkillers during delivery. How does that work?!
The practice of Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the structures (spine) and function (controlled by your nerve system).
We know that when your spine is functioning and moving as it should the right messages will be passed out your muscles, organs and cells, allowing optimal function. When this is not happening, we have altered function, discomfort and at times restricted development.
The solution? Chiropractic care.
And yes, we do see people of all ages, mums, bubs, dads, aunts and grandies :)
